Just me an’ ma piano

Have I told you that I’m taking piano lessons? If you are a regular reader of this blog you may already know that I acquired a piano a couple of years ago. I’ve been trying to learn by myself, but was not sticking to it. So I now see a lovely lady called Diane once every two weeks for a lesson and I’m loving it. Diane is lovely and a great teacher and we have a good laugh. She’s given me an Adele song to learn, but I’m sad to say that trying to coordinate my left and right hands is the musical equivalent to rubbing my tummy and patting my head at the same time. Gave it a another go today and it’s just not coming…yet. I’ll keep trying.

Not a lot’s been happening here. Been gearing up for Christmas (I have almost finished writing all my Christmas cards…I know – sad! But I must have about 60 cards to send every year and I want to get them out by the end of this month) plus we’ve had a fair few birthdays this month. My boy turns six next week. I can’t believe he’s that age already!! He wants a Nerf gun and a wheeley case thing. He just announced in the car this afternoon that he also wants a Despicable Me Fart Gun…boys are so lovely aren’t they?? It’s my birthday at the end of the month where I will be 25 again! Well, okay, 43. Can’t believe I’m that age. One minute I was 25 and the next I’m in my 40s…how did that happen? Where did the time go? A few friends have also turned 50 recently.

Anyway, nothing I can do about getting older.

What else have I been up to? Well I finished reading The Interpretation of Murder, which was great. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Am now on to the third of the Outlander series. Also watched the last Poirot. Am not sure what I think of it. I think I missed a bit of it because the kids and hubby managed to talk through a good bit of it so I kept missing important clues. Sigh. I love Poirot. Have you seen Yonderland? If you like Horrible Histories, you’ll love this. I think it’s funny and I’m also loving it because it’s something (apart from Dr Who) I can watch with my kids and we can all enjoy it. We are looking forward to tomorrow’s episode.

Regarding Christmas, am steaming ahead making a few Christmas presents. Will do a show all once the big day is over and all the recipients – some of whom read this blog – have opened their pressies!!

Right, on that note, am off to put the kids to bed (they have been super noisy and ‘energetic’ today), check on the guinea pigs and make another cup of tea. Til next time.

ps the boy has just come in to ask if – on his special day (his birthday) – he can go to school wearing his blazer, shirt, tie, tie pin and his school shorts. The answer I gave him is ‘yes, yes, yes, yes and no, it’s too cold’.

Trying to muster up the energy and inclination…

…to write today. It’s incredibly hot already and my face is streaming thanks to particularly bad hay fever today. Hmmmm…write or lounge on sofa watching telly??? Hmmmm.

So, how are you all today? Looking forward to another fabby sunny day in the UK? I love the sun, I really do, but I can’t stand the heat. If it’s too hot, I’m inside. Am defo a northerner. I prefer cool to hot and the thought of sunbathing is abhorrent. Anyway, it’s hot today, it’s a beautiful day in fact, and I should just be enjoying it instead of moaning about the heat. Our poor guinea pigs are finding it a bit hard. I’ve got them outside at the moment enjoying some shade within an exercise pen we have for them. Poor old Darcy is long-haired and I think he’s finding the heat particularly hard. I could offer to dunk them in some cold water, but the way they give me stinkers of looks after a bath suggests that might not be such a good idea. Our ‘Ginns’ do not like water.

It’s peaceful in the house just now. My children are at a summer club run by our local church. They’ve been going every morning this week and been loving it. I’ve been loving it cos it’s given me some much needed peace and quiet and time to myself. The minute they are back, however, they revert to fighting and calling each other names. Ah siblings!!

Right, I am procrastinating. If I ever want to get Ham published I need to get it ready, so I will leave you just now to go and concentrate on my new book.

Til next time.

It’s a terrible thing when you can’t think of anything to write

There comes a time in the life of a blog when you run out of interesting things to say. I am at that time. I don’t lead a really interesting life…it’s a run-of-the-mill working mother’s life which is taken up with washing and cooking and ironing and cleaning. So this week I don’t have much to tell.

Okay, so I have one thing to tell. Last week we all went to the village’s Gala Day. This is the second year it’s happened and it was really good. My parents came with us, the weather was fantastic and the gala was packed. It was really nice to see a big part of the village turning up to support it. What I love about living in this area is that because we are near Faslane (our local naval base) and many people living here are in the emergency services, we always have interesting people turning up with interesting vehicles. This year was no different: we had the Fire Service again (my boy loves Fireman Sam so he was in the cab of the appliance (that’s Fire Service speak for Fire Engine) and chatting away to the Firefighters) and the Bomb Squad turned up too. When we first heard they were coming, hubby and I couldn’t help but laugh in that ‘what do you mean the bomb squad are coming to the gala day?’ kind of way. It seemed absurd, but the guys turned up with a big truck and four by four plus one of those robots you see in movies like the Hurt Locker…the robots that they send in to defuse bombs. It was (in the words of my daughter) ‘awesome’. They chatted to us about what the different equipment did. They had helmets and breathing apparatus for underwater work and all sorts of other stuff. It was great. My dad, who was in the Royal Naval Reserves, was in his element chatting to the guys. There was a climbing wall and stalls and all sorts of other things and of course I forgot to take photos!! It was a good day. Mum and dad came back to ours afterwards to sit in the shade and drink tea and chat and have a laugh. It was great.

Talking of the good weather, I’ve been putting the guinea pigs out in their pen outside and they are loving it. It’s a wee bit windy tonight, but they are still out there cropping the grass and running around and generally having a nice guinea piggy life. It’s nice to see them doing it.

What else has been happening? Well I was gasping for a cup of tea earlier, but had to go and get the kids from school, so I put some tea into a travel mug and took it into the car. I put it in the cup holder, but the cup was slightly too big. I thought it would be fine, but I’d just reversed out of the driveway when the cup took a dive and ended up under my feet, boiling hot tea splashing all over the car floor. Several curse words later and a screech to a stop (not literally, I wasn’t going fast, but it sounds more dramatic) and I surveyed the damage. There was not one jot of tea left in the mug and my carpet was steaming. Sigh. I was busy muttering to myself when I was suddenly aware that I was not alone. I looked up to see my two neighbours looking at me as if I’d gone mad. I didn’t know if they thought I had lost my mind, but they gave me such quizzical looks that I felt an explanation was in order – there was also the fact that I’d said some expletives rather loudly and my drivers’ side window was open at the time. Anyway, I rolled down the passengers’ side window and explained what had happened. They just laughed. I thought nothing more about it until I returned home later this afternoon to find a travel mug stuffed into the metal bits of our gate. I knew immediately who had left it there!! I went over to thank them and they just laughed. They said they felt I should have a new mug seeing as how the other one was so tricky!! It made me smile.

It’s past nine o’clock just now – Wee Willie Winkie time in Scotland – so I will end this blog here. I need to go and retrieve the pigs out of the garden anyway and stuff their cage with hay. They love munching on hay. So until next time.

PS a wee word on Game of Thrones…sigh!! I can’t believe I’m going to have to wait another year to see the next series. It cannot come quickly enough. The last one of the series was good because it tied up a few ends regarding what had happened to other characters. My fave moment of the episode was when the Lannisters were gathered and Joffrey was spoken to like he was a small child. I think Joffrey will try and get his grandfather and Tyrion back for that – he’s that nasty – but he’s not clever enough. Anyway, I need to wait til next year to find out what happens OR I could read all the books. Dilemma, dilemma. Ach, I think the books it is!!

PPS have just rushed outside to rescue the guinea pigs. All of a sudden the heavens opened and the rain came down really hard. They sheltered in the cardboard box I’d left in there for them, but they still got a little wet when I scooped them up and ran back inside. Have you ever seen a disgruntled slightly wet guinea pig? They are hysterical. They have expressive wee faces and the faces they showed just then was ‘we are seriously pi**ed off’!! Hee hee.

No gluing, peace and quiet, St Andrew’s and Sam

There’s not been much crafting going on here lately. Been too busy being a mum, wife, worker, laundress, taxi driver, chef and all the other jobs I have to do. Not that I’m complaining. It keeps me busy, but I would like a little bit more time to stick stuff and paint stuff and knit stuff and sew stuff. Maybe me and the kids will do it at the weekend.

Last Sunday – Mother’s Day – my kids made me breakfast in bed (well, their dad made it). The girl made me four cards, the boy one and I also got a commercially made card from them each. My mother’s day pressies included a mini greenhouse (which I’m going to start using once the icy weather clears), a DVD and some Lindor chocs, which are my favourite. I had a lovely day. The kids were very excited about everything, especially as a friend of ours who has two children the same age invited them round in the afternoon for a play. They were away for three hours and it was blissfully quiet here. Hubby and I didn’t know what to do with ourselves! We could watch the telly without someone dancing in front of it or declaring loudly that they required a drink. We could sit and talk without someone butting in with their opinion on the matter. And we had a lovely time just being without having to run after our two.

We missed them though and were glad to get them back!

There’s not much to report chez moi. The weather has been a bit hit and miss lately. Last weekend we had snow blizzards, this week it’s been a mixed bag of sunny weather (yay!) and overcast skies (booh!). Sunny weather always cheers me up, so I love it.

St Andrew's in the Square
Was at a really beautiful place for work the other day. St Andrew’s in the Square is an old church in the centre of St Andrew’s Square in Glasgow. It’s no longer used for worship, but has a cafe downstairs (Cafe Source) in the basement and the upper part (where folk used to worship) is a venue for events. The church/events part is really beautiful and if you ever get the chance to go to it, go and have a look and be prepared to be wowed. It’s lovely.

Sam (2)

Above – couldn’t help but take this photo of Sam, he’s so nosey. What a stare he has! He’s daring me to put my hand in his cage and get him. Of the two, Sam is the quickest and hardest to catch. I put this down to the fact that Darcy is fat and lazy and a bit more laid back. They are both lovely creatures though and very docile.

Anyway, enough of me wittering on about our pets. I have things to do, so I will sign off now. Til next time.

PS Am still reading Little Dorrit…I am close to the end. It doesn’t usually take me this long to read a book, but LD is a long book and I’ve often been too tired to read it at night. I’m still enjoying it. I love Dickens’ books. He’s one of my writing heroes.
