Technically it’s a broom made of twigs tied around a stick, but in Scotland it’s also a naughty person. For instance, we might call a child a ‘wee besom’ for doing something naughty. Apparently it can also mean a woman of low moral standing, but I’ve never heard anyone use it in that context so it must be an old usage.
